Who uses Spiritual Counselling?

Spiritual counselling can be crucial when we simply don't know what to do next. We all have times when clarity eludes us, when we feel discouraged; times when the whole world seems to want to stop us; times when great grief, sorrow or other kinds of spiritual and emotional turmoil seem to drag us from our deep commitments to being peaceful and threaten never to release us.

These situations often provide opportunities to make great progress, despite feeling very lost at the time. Often the clarity, support, and insight of a helper will guide you back to your intention.

Spiritual counselling is commonly useful when you:

  • are beginning your spiritual journey and looking for clarity and direction,
  • are engaged on a spiritual path but searching for your next step,
  • encounter a block that you feel unwilling or unable to tackle alone,
  • want help to clarify and eliminate the resistance you encounter,
  • are in emotional or spiritual crisis.

Starting Your Spiritual Journey

Setting foot on your spiritual path is easy. You simply decide to do it. You embrace the intention of becoming in alignment with your true spiritual nature. But what happens next?

Experiencing difficulty setting your goals?

Spiritual counselling helps you determine and set your personal spiritual goals. Through discussion with your counsellor you decide what exercises and tools will help you achieve them, learn how to practice them, and learn what progress and pitfalls you can expect to encounter.

Spiritual counselling for when you are blocked

You may feel that you have tried everything, but nothing seems to help you move out of this feeling of being stuck. Often you do not even know what is holding you down - preventing you from moving forward. I too have felt this way during practice and know feeling stuck can be very frustrating and discouraging. You feel isolated and may want to give up.

Feeling resistant or blocked

Spiritual counselling can help you to determine and align your personal goals with Higher Goals. You are encouraged and supported in choosing what exercises and tools are best suited to your lifestyle and temperament. Learn how to consistently apply them and what progress and pitfalls you can expect to encounter.

Such emotions are, in themselves, blocks to further progress. Engaging with your spiritual counsellor at these times serves several purposes:

  • helps you find and clarify the problem
  • helps you find solutions
  • helps you plan your next steps and establish your goals
  • provides encouragement when you need it the most

Spiritual Counselling for emotional or spiritual crisis

Spiritual seekers embrace the focus of peace. They intend to place the events of their lives and the world in perspective. They hold a spiritual context of releasing the past, releasing beliefs, and perhaps ultimately, disengaging from the world.

spiritual counselling and negative beliefsAs you apply your spiritual practice, you will become more open and sensitive - your awareness will have automatically expanded. In such states you are may achieve epiphanies - moments of Light and Presence. You may find yourself experiencing a profound, indescribable awareness - a knowing suffusing your being. These moments signal a deepening and maturing of your spiritual understanding. You are moving from 'knowing about' to 'being' your practice. Often such states are brief. Losing them can be a devastating experience and may signal a profound sense of loss and state of depression.

Many other heavy states may be experienced. These can be as devastating as the loss of a loved one, causing you to question the very core of life and understanding.

Challenges can also come in much less direct ways. You may begin to empathize, on a visceral level, with the millions who suffer every day - the world-wide physical and emotional abuse of children. You may be stunned by the impersonal and far-reaching destruction caused by war. The desire to blame and feel helpless can be a great block in your life.

Your counsellor, mentor, guide, can help you move through such grief, doubt and confusion - they can help you re-contextualize your situation - release the negative emotions. Spiritual principles can clarify and simplify such pain. Spiritual practice can help guide you back to clarity and purpose.
