Complementary Therapy

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) uses an approach that includes a wide range of techniques such as: herbal supplements, vitamins, acupuncture, chiropractics, nutrition, guided imagery, homeopathic treatment, prayer, massage, biofeedback, music therapy, exercise and fitness, hypnosis and other mind-body techniques and energy modalities that work with the body's natural ability to heal itself.

I have been involved in complementary therapy techniques since 1985. My initial training was in energy work, eventually focusing only on Reiki. I learned meditation and relaxation techniques, holotropic breathing (breath therapy) and taught each of them in individual sessions and workshops. Tapping Therapy (EFT© emotional freedom techniques) is the latest complementary therapy I have explored. It, too, is a part of what I do for myself, as well as teach and offer to others.

They all help

Besides counselling, Reiki, flower remedies, Tapping Therapy, relaxation are all tools I use to for myself, students and clients. These therapies strengthen and assist us before, during and after releasing our belief systems and blocked energies from the physical, emotional and/or spiritual body.

'Doing my work'... 'working on myself' and encouraging others to do so, offers intense joy and peace. At the same time, when searching in our past, bringing up ancient fear, shame, and anger, it is most helpful to feel balanced and restored during and afterward. At such times it is a great comfort to feel the balm of complementary therapies.

What does Complementary Therapy have to do with being on a spiritual path?

At first the seed coat protects, but eventually it becomes a cageIt was complementary therapy that opened my heart. I was participating in a six-day intensive workshop in Therapeutic Touch. While the teachers were aligning my energies, I shifted consciousness and moved into a deep and profound peace. It was a stunning and unforgettable wake up call from Spirit. It stirred an intense longing to return to that state. It is one of the main reasons I began a spiritual quest.

Many have found that participation in some kind of Complementary Therapy was their introduction to a spiritual life, and have discovered ways to continue to develop their spirituality through it.

Energy workers, whether in Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, or other modalities, often come to a realization of the connection to Universal Energy as a result of applying their techniques. Though they may have learned them to gain information and add to their skills, they realized their sacredness.

A Spiritual Life asks us to be intensely focused

Those of us living a spiritual life continue to erase, release, and let go of past issues, present concepts and anything else that blocks our awareness of that essential Inner Light. Sit with that statement for a moment... anything that blocks our awareness of the Light. That is an all encompassing intention. So we see that spiritual life can, at times, be difficult, scary, and intensely focused work. The complementary therapy tools provide a full array of support, comfort and balance during times of change and stress.

We like to know that our body is strong and energies are flowing

It is most helpful to physically align as well as balance the emotional and spiritual energies. Receiving and giving Reiki certainly helps to strengthen and keep the energies flowing. Reiki self-treatments remind me, as does meditation, of the pure inner peace contained within us all.

Flower essences, such as the Australian Bush Flower remedies are a powerful support in regaining balance and calm after releasing a sadness, trauma or resistance.

When I was in serious physical trouble, complementary therapies helped, comforted, and balanced me. I felt loved, cared for, and accepted

Small cell is a form of cancer that few survive. I have survived now for many years. I made use of complementary therapies daily, both while going through the treatments and afterwards. Reiki treatments from others were soothing and took that heavy leaden feeling away. When I was more recovered, I took on my habitual daily self-treatments, which continually strengthened me.

I also took soothing herbal concoctions, such as Essiac, aloe, and herbal teas. The flower remedies also helped to balance my energy. I popped lots of vitamins. I had some acupressure sessions. I was even gifted with a reassuring psychic reading.

It all helped. It comforted me. It balanced me. I felt loved, cared for, and accepted.

It made me feel better in all areas. Emotionally, I struggled with being a healer who was now deathly ill, a healer with an illness centered at the heart (love) chakra. Having my students and friends give me Reiki, helped soothe that wound. Physically the Reiki, Shiatsu, yoga, meditation, Essiac, and so on, all helped me feel less foggy, heavy and seemed to increase my strength.

Spiritually, I found that as soon as I could meditate I was able to move into the familiar, ever present stillness which nourished me. I felt the complementary sessions offered help that is not possible to measure by a machine or a blood test.

Consider exploring and sampling the alternative therapies, the complementary therapies in your daily living, as well as during times of physical, emotional and spiritual crisis. Use the many complementary therapy options on your spiritual path as well. I am certain you will find they assist you.
