Phone Counselling - How to make best use of your Session Time

Every thought repeated with emotion and certainty affirms a stance and jells a beliefWhen I moved to the wilds of Nova Scotia, I left all my students and clients in Ontario. Though I did travel 'home' a few times a year, many who wanted sessions did not want to wait for my return. One student suggested a phone session would be a powerful substitute to face-to-face work.

I am comfortable sharing and listening to others using the medium of a phone. I find it natural and easy to carry out a counselling session in that medium. I can instantly focus on the needs of the person on the other end of the line. I can connect with them and immerse myself easily in their story.

Phone Counselling sessions are as helpful as an in person session

I am assured that a phone counselling session is as helpful and useful as one is person. Seven years of such work convinces me that it is a powerful and viable option. It offers the opportunity for personal work, no matter how far apart we may be.

Three simple requests before a session begins

I ask that you do some preparation before we have our time together so that we are clearly focused on your issue. Send me an email answering these questions. One word answers and point form are fine. Just think/feel through what you hope to gain or change.

One: What do you want from our time together?

This may be a particular want, such as freedom from an issue in your life or it may be that you want help with a long-term goal.

You could be feeling really stuck in your life — you may have a particular issue you want to release and gain some clarity about.

You may want instruction on forgiveness, EFT©, releasing, or surrender. You might want help to focus on your spiritual practice or direction.

Decide what it is you want to come of your phone counselling session — perhaps help to clarify your goals or firm up your direction. Thinking about what you want will help you and me to focus.

Two: What do you think prevents you from having or achieving it?

What is blocking you from having or feeling what you want? You may be stumped by this question. Never mind. Asking it is what is important. The question itself motivates your subconscious to focus on the answers.

Three: Will you know when you get it?

What will be different when you do achieve or get what you want? In other words how will you or your life be different.

For example, you might have a fear of public speaking. We could use EFT© on the phobia. It will often resolve most of the intensity of this fear in a session. You would then tap out any left over fear, for example while you walk up to the podium or begin to give your speech by yourself. My point is that you will know that you have what you want from the session when you can feel fearless while thinking about the speech.

You might have some work to do on your own to release the remnants of the fear. So it may be that we will require several sessions together to achieve what you want.

It is important to think about these three areas. Consider your intention, what you want. What will it look like when you get it and how you will know you have achieved it. Answering the question, no matter how briefly, will set your intention for each phone counselling session. It help us both to focus on what you hope to gain or change. Answering the third question will encourage you to think about how you will know you have what you are seeking or what you want.
