What is Reiki?

I am a practitioner of Usui Shiki Ryoho (translation: Usui System of Natural Healing), a system of Reiki practice that comes through a spiritual lineage.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is the ancient, hands-on technique of balancing and renewing personal energy flow in the body/mind/spirit complex, by way of channeling of Universal Energy. This technique assists in physical, emotional and spiritual healing and well-being.

Students are encouraged to apply Reiki energy to themselves on a daily basis to promote and maintain health. The opportunity to use and share Reiki with others through the simple "hands on" technique is taught in the First Degree class, and expanded upon in the Second Degree class.

I believe that Reiki provides a framework for personal and spiritual growth and is thus more than a healing technique. For this reason, I encourage you to "Let Reiki teach you."

I offer First, Second and Master level Reiki. I am curently based in Nova Scotia, with periodic, extended trips to Ontario. If you have an interest in taking a Reiki course, or would like to ask me a question about it, please email me at ellen@ellensutherland.com.

Reiki First Degree

This is a four-day course, of three hours per day.

Each day a Reiki attunement will be given to you to permanently open you to this energy.

In addition, you will be taught the various hand positions which will enable you to carry out self-treatment and treatment on others.

There will also be ample opportunity to practice giving Reiki to your peers with guidance from the Reiki Master during the class.

Reiki Second Degree

In this two day class the student will receive one final attunement to enhance their channelling ability. They will be taught the ancient healing symbols and will learn how and when to use them.

At least three months must pass between first and second degree attunements. The student is encouraged to go quietly within to decide whether it is time for them to deepen their commitment to Reiki by taking this step.

Reiki Mastership

The journey to Mastery is one that calls forth the teacher in you. An intense inner searching is required by those seeking Mastery.

Becoming a Master in Usui Shiki Ryoho is a thoughtful, slow process spanning at least a year of Reiki and personal sessions between us.

I would like you to have a Reiki practice in place and consider Reiki to be your primary practice. Your First and Second Degree initiation must also be congruent with my teachings. For example, my master students must have had four First Degree initiations, and one in Second Degree.

I maintain a deep, close relationship with my Masters, and many of my students.

The History and Lineage of Reiki

The lineage refers to a line of masters who have passed on the energetic of Reiki beginning with Mikao Usui, through Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata to the current grandmaster, Phyllis Lei Furumoto. Phyllis Lei Furumoto initiated me as a Reiki Master.

Please note that the following is anecdotal:

According to Buddhists Sutras, Reiki began many thousands of years ago as the art of spiritual self-improvement. Reiki calligraphy was a system of healing meditations used by Tibetan Holy men. As with many oral traditions, this teaching eventually fell out of use.

In the early 1900`s Reiki was rediscovered in Japan by a Christian monk by the name of Mikao Usui. After years of searching for the ability to heal, he discovered ancient Tibetan symbols and formulas written in Sanskrit. However, he was unable to activate these symbols.

Mikao Usui decided to fast and meditate on the holy mountain of Kuriyama in the hopes of doing so. After 21 days Usui was given a revelation on how to use the symbols, and Reiki as a system of natural healing re-emerged. It was eventually brought to the Western world by Hawayo Takata in the 1930s.
